Symptoms

  • Migrating a virtual machine from one HA cluster to another changes the virtual machine’s protection state from Protectedto Unprotected.
  • HA status reports the virtual machine as Unprotected on the summary tab after it is migrated to another HA cluster.
  • Reconfiguring HA on the ESXi does not resolve the issue.

Resolution

This is a known issue.

To workaround this issue:
  1. Verify that the state of the migrated virtual machines has changed to Unprotected.
  2. Disable and re-enable HA on the destination cluster.
Alternatively, if you have not yet migrated the virtual machines to the destination HA cluster:
  1. Disable HA on the source cluster.
  2. Migrate the virtual machine to the destination HA cluster.
  3. Re-enable HA on the source cluster.

Impact/Risks

Warning: The virtual machine is not protected by HA after it is migrated to another cluster.
